AIDA Cruises trials 100% renewable bio marine fuel on AIDAprima | Cruise News

On September 5th, AIDA Cruises refueled its AIDAprima vessel at the Port of Rotterdam (Netherlands) using 100% renewable Bio Marine Fuel (BMF100), marking the first trial of the biofuel in regular operations.

This pilot project aims to assess the fuel’s performance and its potential future use across the AIDA fleet. The sustainable biofuel, supplied by VARO Energy, is produced entirely from advanced feedstocks such as organic waste and residue, offering a greenhouse gas emission reduction of at least 85% compared to conventional fossil fuels.

Following refueling, AIDAprima will test the biofuel during voyages from Hamburg through Norway’s fjords, gathering data to inform broader fleet adoption. AIDA Cruises prioritizes second-generation biofuels, which do not require engine modifications, making them a practical option for reducing emissions in existing ships. The company views biofuels as a key component of its decarbonization strategy, complementing other initiatives like the use of LNG-liquefied natural gas, shore power, and onboard energy storage.

As an early adopter of biofuel testing within the Carnival Corporation & plc group, AIDA Cruises continues to lead in sustainability, aligning with the corporation’s goal of net-zero emissions from ship operations by 2050. VARO Energy, known for its innovative blending techniques, has produced a marine biofuel that serves as a drop-in alternative to traditional fuels, maintaining engine performance while significantly reducing environmental impact. This collaboration between AIDA Cruises and VARO Energy underscores the cruise line’s commitment to advancing sustainable maritime practices.
