ASUKA III Completes First LNG Bunkering in Singapore

The ASUKA III, recognized as the largest cruise ship under the Japanese flag, has successfully completed its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation at the Singapore Cruise Centre. This event signifies a significant advancement in the adoption of cleaner marine fuels within the Asia-Pacific cruise industry.

FueLNG Private Limited, a joint venture between Shell Singapore and Seatrium, executed the bunkering operation. This milestone also represents Shell’s inaugural LNG supply to a cruise vessel in the region, underscoring Singapore’s evolving role as a central hub for sustainable maritime fuel solutions. 

The ASUKA III, a 52,200 gross ton vessel measuring 230 meters in length and 29.8 meters in width, is operated by NYK Cruises, a subsidiary of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line). Delivered in April 2025, the ship is equipped with dual-fuel propulsion systems, allowing it to utilize both LNG and conventional marine fuels. 

This operation follows a similar LNG bunkering event earlier in 2025, where Silversea’s Silver Nova received LNG at the same terminal. These developments reflect a broader industry trend towards adopting LNG as a transitional fuel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from maritime operations.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has been instrumental in facilitating such initiatives, aiming to establish Singapore as a leading LNG bunkering hub. Through collaborations with industry stakeholders, the MPA continues to support the maritime sector’s transition towards more sustainable energy sources.

The successful LNG bunkering of ASUKA III not only enhances the vessel’s operational capabilities but also sets a precedent for future LNG-powered cruise operations in the region, aligning with global efforts to promote environmentally responsible maritime practices.
