METS: Net Zero by 2050 Requires More Practical Reporting – Cruise Industry News
Jason Stefanatos, global decarbonization director at DNV, said that when it comes to reporting systems, there is a mix of methods being seen among ship owners in terms of their processes.
Speaking at DNV’s Maritime Energy Transition Summit (METS) 2025, he said: “We see some owners (who) are quite advanced; they have automation, they transmit data to all stakeholders. Others rely more on traditional reporting, more on more manual work.”
Stefanatos said that he expects to see a significant transition to more advanced reporting systems due to the increasing complexity in regulation and more stakeholders wanting access on the data.
Stefanatos emphasized that getting to net zero by 2050 requires practical application right now; therefore, there needs to be a focus on how to go from long-term planning to more practical implementation.
“A good (data) infrastructure can provide more solid findings. It can give more knowledge, which will facilitate and enable easier decision making for the future,” he added.
Stefanatos also pointed to decarbonization and said that the international pressure there is building up. With regulations becoming more stringent, action needs to be taken across the entire value chain.
“We have carbon neutral fuels … We have biofuels as drop in fuels. They will play a very significant role. We have energy efficiency and technology. We see innovation and new technological development, which is great because we will have more solutions; but it also creates the need for more robust analysis and verification on the actual savings,” he said.
“The question is: How can I assess what solution goes to my vessel, to my fleet, to my routes? Make sure to assess the fleet, identify the potential, identify what are the best solutions for the specific vessel and fleet, and make a very solid implementation plan with KPIs and monitoring so you are sure that you can follow it up,” he added.
