Minimal Impact to Offer English-Speaking Cruises on Selar’s Captain Arctic – Cruise Industry News
Minimal Impact Cruises is set to offer five English-speaking cruises onboard Selar’s first ship, the Captain Arctic.
Currently under construction, the 36-guest vessel is set to enter service in the Arctic in late 2026 as the industry’s first expedition vessel powered by wind and solar energy.
According to a press release, Minimal Impact Cruises is cooperating with Southern Sea Ventures for the international sailings, which begin in November 2026. The partner is said to provide a kayaking program on all departures.
The 2026-27 expeditions will sail to Northern Norway, Svalbard, and Greenland and are now open for booking.
“I am thrilled that we are offering a truly low-impact affordable luxury option for polar expedition cruising with our 26/27 Arctic departures,” said Heather Thorkelson, founder of Minimal Impact Cruises.
“In an industry where almost all newly built ships are 150+ passengers, the Captain Arctic will provide an unparalleled bespoke experience with her combination of small size, sustainable technology for those concerned about their travel footprint, and personal comfort. This ship is the missing link we’ve been waiting for.”
The Captain Arctic is currently being built for France-based Selar Expeditions in Mauritius. The 70-meter-long vessel is being constructed with a series of sustainable practices and systems, including rigid solar sails, clean electric propulsion, autonomous water production, an organic heating system and a zero-waste policy at sea.
“We’re building the first sailing ship powered by the sun and the wind—not just as a technical innovation, but as a shift in the way we explore. With only 36 passengers, we consume less, navigate differently, and experience the Arctic more deeply,” said Sophie Galvagnon, captain, ice pilot, and co-founder and CEO of Selar.
The ship is expected to enter service for Selar in the Arctic in late 2026.
