Royal Caribbean banned multi plugs

Royal Caribbean Bans Multi-Plug Outlets

** UPDATE September 27, 2024**

Royal Caribbean has recently updated its prohibited items list, clarifying that one type of multi-plug outlet is, in fact, allowed on board: USB chargers with multiple outlets. These chargers, commonly known as USB hubs or USB splitters, enable guests to connect multiple devices to a single outlet for convenient charging.

According to the updated list, “We do allow consumer-type power conversion device USB chargers (multi-plug blocks on which the outputs are for USB cables).”

This change allows travelers to bring USB charging cubes to power up multiple devices like phones, tablets, laptops, and smartwatches simultaneously during their cruise. These cubes come in various styles, offering different numbers of USB ports and charging speeds. Some models even feature a regular plug in addition to USB ports, though these may not be fully permitted.

It’s important to note that any USB charger brought on board must be stamped with a US/Europe-recognized Conformance Marking to demonstrate compliance with electrical safety standards.

It’s no surprise that cruise lines prohibit dangerous items like weapons or fireworks, but sometimes the list of banned items can catch travelers off guard. Royal Caribbean recently updated its list of prohibited items, adding “multi-plug outlets” to the mix. These handy gadgets, which allow multiple devices to be plugged into a single outlet, are now classified under “flammable items,” joining other forbidden items like extension cords and power strips.

For travelers who rely on multiple devices—phones, tablets, laptops—this change could be a bit frustrating. Older ships often have limited power outlets, making it challenging to charge several devices at once. However, this new rule is aimed at safety, as plugging too many devices into one outlet can cause overheating, power issues, or even fire hazards.

A multi-plug outlet is designed to fit directly into a wall socket and expand the number of plugs you can use at once. While convenient, these devices pose a risk if overloaded, leading to Royal Caribbean’s decision to prohibit them. Until recently, the prohibited items list only mentioned “extension cords, including power strips/surge-protected strips” as being banned, but the new update has expanded the policy to specifically call out multi-plug outlets.

This change comes as part of a broader update to Royal Caribbean’s prohibited items policy. The list now offers more detailed examples of banned items in multiple categories. For instance, the “Knives and sharp objects” section now clarifies that ice picks, meat cleavers, and even sabers are prohibited. A new “Tools” category bans items like hammers, drills, saws, and even cattle prods—yes, really.

Most travelers probably won’t think to bring these unusual items on board, but some more common items are also restricted. Things like clothing irons, travel steamers, and pepper spray may seem like travel essentials under normal circumstances but are best left at home when cruising.

How to Manage Device Charging Without Multi-Plug Outlets

With multi-plug outlets off the table, it’s important to find other ways to keep your devices charged during your Royal Caribbean vacation. Here are a few tips:

  • Prioritize Devices: Not every gadget needs to come along. With all the activities and entertainment on Royal Caribbean ships, some devices may not even get used.
  • Plan Charging Times: Charge your devices strategically. For example, charge your phone while you’re enjoying dinner or recharge your tablet while you’re at the pool.
  • Use Overnight Charging: Take advantage of overnight downtime to recharge all your devices.

Always check the cruise line’s prohibited items list before your trip to avoid having anything confiscated at the terminal. Understanding these rules will help ensure a smooth start to your vacation!
